Newsletter: London Climate Action Week, raising ambition in Asia, and first buyers bootcamp in Europe announced - News

We have been busy across our global hubs this month. At London’s first Climate Action Week, RE100 members discussed collaboration between landlords and tenants to source clean energy. We’ve been in Taiwan, Japan and Korea where RE100 members are asking for raised ambition from policymakers, and we've welcomed 10 new members: Asset Management OneCity of London CorporationDerwent LondonJD SportsKeurig Dr PepperPNCQTS Realty TrustSlaughter and MaySwisscom and Zurich. We have also announced our first buyers bootcamp in Europe. And remember, the RE100 reporting window closes at the end of this month. Read on for more.

Business leadership across London

The Climate Group led key events at London Climate Action Week to showcase corporate leadership on renewable electricity. We brought together landlords and tenants to discuss how to overcome challenges faced in leased premises, and we saw the launch of the UK hub of the RE-Source platform (of which we are a founding member) – aiming to accelerate the use of renewables by companies in the UK. Supporting corporate sourcing in Europe  

Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100, The Climate Group spoke alongside the European Commission's Head of Unit for Renewable and CCS policy Paula Abreau Margues at EU Sustainable Energy Week. We also spoke at Schneider Electric’s Perspectives Summit and the Intersolar Summit Spain.

Increasing Ambition - South Korea & Taiwan

Our ongoing work in Korea and Taiwan is beginning to bear fruit thanks to the leadership of our active members. At a recent summit in Korea, The Korean renewable energy department stated that RE100 support schemes will be provided later this year with some great coverage in the Korean press.

Japan - Call to Action  

20 RE100 companies called on the Japanese government to set a target for 50% renewable electricity by 2030 as well as for a more favorable policy environment for corporate sourcing. Our local partnerJCLP organized the summit where this was called for, ahead of the G20 Summit, in the presence of the Minister for Environment. JCLP have since been recognized by the Japanese Government for its work driving forward RE100 in Japan.

EP100 Progress and Insights Report Launched 

The Climate Group’s EP100 initiative on smart energy use launched the first EP100 Progress and Insights Report yesterday. The report showcases the ambition and achievements of EP100 members and highlights the environmental and business case for making smarter use of energy. Please find the full report here.

Climate Week NYC: Please let us know if you are planning to make progress announcements on renewable energy targets ahead of Climate Week NYC as we're keen to build a drumbeat of activity.

Companies including RE100 members AdobeAppleEquinixIron MountainMicrosoft,Salesforce and QTS sent a letter to Virginia’s utility Dominion Energy asking them to use renewable energy to power their data centers.

HP Inc. has strengthened its RE100 target, now aiming to reach 100% renewable electricity for their global operations by 2035.

Events: 

July 30-31: Australian Clean Energy Summit 2019 

Run by the Clean Energy Council, this will take place at Sydney International Convention Centre. The Business Renewables Centre Australia (BRC-A) is holding two free events - a breakfast panel on day 1 and a PPA session on day 2. Other events that are taking place are subject to fees.

September 23-29: Climate Week NYC and RE100 Members Forum in The Hub Run by The Climate Group in coordination with the UN and the City of New York, Climate Week NYC is the time and place for the world to showcase amazing climate action and discuss how to do more. RE100 will celebrate its fifth birthday and convene its members for its second Annual Global Members Forum. Get in touch to know more. . October 1-3: RE-Source 2019 and Corporate Buyers Day, Amsterdam The world’s largest gathering of renewable energy buyers and suppliers. With more markets opening up to the corporate renewable sourcing opportunity, RE-Source 2019 is the perfect platform to network, learn and do business with over 1000 key players. A buyers-only bootcamp will take place on 1 October - more information to follow.
