  • The ever-growing RE100 membership, and the size of some of RE100’s newest members, has driven up the initiative’s combined annual electricity consumption.
  • If the RE100 initiative was a country, it would be the world’s 10th largest in terms of electricity consumption.
  • Over 500TWh per year is now committed to 100% renewable electricity by 2050.

RE100 members now consume more electricity each year than France, and are approaching the electricity consumption of Germany. If the RE100 initiative, which has over 400 companies committed to consuming 100% renewable electricity by 2050 – including Apple, Sony, Samsung Electronics, AB InBev and Google – was a country, it would be the world’s 10th largest in terms of electricity consumption

The ever-growing number of RE100 members, and the size of some of RE100’s newest members, has driven up the initiative’s combined electricity consumption. This significant milestone means RE100 has surpassed 500TWh per year committed to transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2050, demonstrating how corporate demand for renewable electricity is booming and speeding up the phase out of fossil fuels.

Governments must recognise this enormous corporate demand and remove policy barriers to enable companies to source 100% renewable electricity at pace and at a fair price, according to RE100. By doing so, corporates can help drive down the price of renewables in challenging markets through their purchasing power.

“The race towards renewables is unstoppable and it’s being driven by our members. By committing to use 100% renewable electricity, our members send a powerful signal to policymakers and energy companies that the future is renewable. With an ever-increasing membership and an annual electricity consumption surpassing France and closing in on that of Germany, it’s clear there’s a huge and increasing demand for renewables. Corporates are taking climate action, governments must now do the same and support corporates with their electricity transition ambitions.”

Ollie Wilson, Head of RE100, Climate Group

The average annual electricity consumption of new RE100 members in 2022 was 1.3TWh, greater than the annual electricity consumption of Fiji and over double the 0.6TWh of 2021. Also in 2022, a total of 77TWh per year was committed to 100% renewable electricity through RE100, this is compared to 46TWh in 2021. 77TWh per year is greater than the annual electricity consumption of Switzerland.

High electricity consuming companies, particularly from South Korea and Japan – including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, KDDI and TDK – continue to strengthen the RE100 initiative and its impact.
